In a capitalist country, were the only the strong can succeed “all men are created equal.” In a modern society, for people everywhere, most things are not equal. In the United States Blacks, Women, and Homosexuals have all been and still are ostracized. In all those cases one group of people had more power over another group of people, not showing equality making it hard or imposable for someone to seize their dreams which can lead to better “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” something we all want. The simple wants of the Average American. In the movie “Gattaca” Vincent Anton genes won’t allow him to come into proximity with his dreams. In the movie “X-Men 2” characters have to deal with growing into mutants, something they cannot grow out of. People grow a great fear in things they don’t know. Whenever society thinks that one large group of people have a job, another smaller group cannot interfere or, be expected to take part in that task.
The Female role in the United Sates before 40s was defined; get married, have children, and stay home to take care of them. Women in society could not go far. Vincent the main character in the movie “Gattaca” was told he would not go far. On the day Vincent was born, his parents found out he would be vulnerable to sickness and would die before them. In order for Vincent to receive his dream job, he had to disguise his weakness, being himself. Vincent’s main antagonist, society resembles feminist of the 40s that fought against all of society.
During the second war the majority of males that were able to work were fighting, and a great demand for workers in the U.S was at hand. For the first time women were allowed to work in factories, and companies. The new working opportunities for women helped keep the economy up, and help create weapon for the war effort. Women helped win the war in spite of society’s thoughts. Vincent out lived his parents in spite of society’s thoughts. Women and Vincent both were said they could not work because they thought of as weak. Instead of seeing the possibilities, as humans we first look at another human’s faults.
Harvey milk was the first openly homosexual to run in an election. Milk wanted to get more people to come out of the closet. Homosexuals were not tolerated and milk wanted to lead a revolution. He brought a new hope, but was sadly assassinated in 1978 before he could accomplish many things he wanted to accomplish, but a dream of a more open and free America did not die. Milk was afraid he would get assassinated but he wished one thing "If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door."
In honor of Milk’s efforts to make homosexuals comfortable with their sexuality, in 1984 The Harvey Milk School, funded by the Hetrick-Martin Institute was created. The HMS was created to give Homosexual students a safe environment to learn in. In the movie “X-Men 2” Iceman came out about being a mutant to his family. His family having little compassion kicked him out and treated him as if he was an enemy. The HMI believed that believes “all young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserves an education.” Professor X, the owner of “The school for talented and gifted children” be lived everyone is untitled to normal life and education. Both of these think that it’s better to be in a learning environment rather, then a tense society learning. True learning cannot happen when opinions are stated instead of fact.
In the book “In memoriam to identity” Rimbaud is told that “education teaches you to be yourself”. Yet everyday we are told what is acceptable in school and society. Even with stuff such as grades, and social class. We are subconsciously ranked and told that were are wrong. Why do we as humans find it easy to find what’s different about someone vs. find out what we have in common? People are capable of any thing in the world, something we cannot understand but they do not stand in the way of us trying to understand it. When a person holds more power over people, more control of society, or the media says its ok. Anything can change; Love, genocide, friendship, envy are just some of the many outcomes possible. It is foolish to say all that we perceptive is right, because we are all influenced on how to feel and what to understand.
